A few days ago I followed a link from reddit to YouTube for Chris LeDoux's "Five Dollar Fine":
I've had it going through my head this week; but "cry in your beer" was pinging my brain as familiar somehow. Something I'd heard in a different song. (More than just being a well-known phrase.) Couldn't place where, and it was too short to let my brain latch onto the thread to get more context, but it was vaguely bugging me.
This morning as I was trying to place it, my brain hopped over to Agony from Into the Woods. Which I was pretty sure didn't contain alcoholic beverages, so ~clearly~ couldn't be the solution, but I was bored so I started singing it in my head.
Halfway through, it hit me that while there's no references to *beer*, the reprise has "While they lie there for years / and you cry on their biers", which is exactly what my brain was pinging on.
(And of course it's a deliberate play on words by Sondheim -- I'm just amused that my brain could simultaneously connect the fragment to Agony and reject it as not possible...)
We're a fun lovin' crowd, kinda rowdy and loud,
Our jukebox won't play no sad songs,
So don't come in here and cry in your beer,
Cause we don't care about who done who wrong.
We got a five dollar fine for whinin'
We're tell you before you come in.
And if it ain't on your mind to have a good time,
Ya'll come back and see us again.
