Updates

* bad brainsoace. Badbad. RL stress (impending roommate transition, trying to find new aide) plus sky-high anxiety plus self-imposed blah (not having spoons to keep up socially, here or elsewhere, leading to me getting upset at myself) is not good combination.

* ...not keeping up here. If I've missed anything major please link me? I really a, interested in y'all, I just get overwhelmed

* reading _adult children of emotionally immature parents_. It is ... revelatory. Not just in terms of emotional immaturity but the effect on the child ("They’re convinced they would be bothering others if they tried to make their needs known." and "Many children of emotionally phobic parents develop the fear that if they start crying, they’ll never stop, which arises because they were never allowed to find out that crying naturally stops on its own when allowed its full expression.") I'm going to ... well, I WANT to ... do a more thorough post about this book and how it relates to me, but it's ... 'interesting' would be an understatement.

* birthday is Saturday. Woo birthday?

* passed my mini-nano goal (official goal is 100, secondary goal 250, I had a bit under 500.) I feel like it sucks, and it also changes tenses because I apparently can't remember how I'm telling stories, but it's words.

* relevantly, scrivener is available for iOS. I am in love. And it can sync through Dropbox, which means I can work on my tablet in bed and my phone otherwise, and both are much faster than trying to type on the computer.

* is anyone interested in reading the mini-nano thing as I write it (may not be in order, definitely won't be edited, absolutely do not want criticism but cheerleading is ok)? It will most likely be under a filter, and completely opt-in (and I a, not offended if you want to wait for the finished story)

View Poll: #19020

comments

Duolingo ditherment

(Still, always, want to type that as Duolinguo. Gah.)

So I am at the point with Spanish where I have gone through all of the Duo lessons and am mainly doing "practice weak skills" over and over again. Which is not unwarranted -- there is a lot I'm shaky on still, even of what duo gives me, and I am nowhere near ready for real world applications.

But I sort of want to use Duo to brush up on my German. And I can't decide how to do it.

Option one is to do both German and Spanish, one right after the other. Which is easy enough to get in the habit of (the biggest hurdle is remembering to do it; two lessons instead of one is not a problem) but seems like it would be the most confusing to my brain.

Option two is to alternate days. Spanish one day, German the next, etc. Less immediate switching between languages, but still involves some.

Option three is to alternate weekends/weekdays (so do one Monday-Friday and the other Sat-Sun). Has the advantage of making it easy to remember which I'm supposed to be doing on a given day.

Option four is to alternate weeks.

Option five is to just use duo for German and find a more immersive source for keeping Spanish practice.

...I can't decide. Halp?

View Poll: Decide for me

comments

Because I like polls

I seem to be in a phase of "watch tv + do crochet", except I can't decide what to watch. So, have a poll!

First two questions are for shows I have seen and am interested in rewatching. First is radio (choose one), second is choose as many as you want. I am limiting myself to what is on Netflix, except for Stargate SG-1 where I have DVDs of at least the first four seasons, which are my favorites anyway. (There are other shows that would be on there (*cough*B5*cough*) except I have no good way to watch them easily.)

Second two questions are for when I want new TV. Same set of options. I am also willing to take suggestions for that category. Strong preference to things available online, for obvious reasons.

Last is for shows that I have watched ... somewhere between half an episode and two episodes of. They didn't grab me, but I am aware early episodes are not always the best, and so I'd be willing to give them a second chance if someone else (who has seen them) thinks they get worth it.

View Poll: TV to watch

comments

Given that I should not really be acquiring more yarn because I have plenty already etc, but that some of wyomingnot's for-sale yarn is calling to me, and it's technically something I could afford...

View Poll: yaaaaarn

comments

Random poll!

So in one of my chats we were talking about fusions with Philip Pullman's HDM universe -- specifically, the concept of daemons. (If you don't know that universe, daemons are basically a corporeal aspect of your soul, always some sort of animal, usually opposite-gender, often something that represents your personality in some way.) We started with fictional characters -- "what would X's daemon be?" -- and moved in to talking about what we would have as daemons.

So, a poll! Feel free to answer as vaguely or as specifically as you'd like.

View Poll: daemon time!

comments

A poll!

So for my last birthday, my roommates sneakily got me (among other things) a festive shiny floaty-balloon.

That was three months ago.

It is still floating.

... I think it maybe has started to sag a bit; the ribbon does not look quite as taut as it did before. But. Yes. It is the amazing energizer balloon! Or something.

So, to interrupt the whinebitchmoanfest that is my journal, I thought I would do a poll: Guess when the balloon will finally surrender to gravity! Month and day (and, if you think it will last more than 11 months longer than it already has, year) ... best guess gets a ficlet in their choice of fandom, or, for people not as interested in fanfic, some other shiny prize which I will think of at some point.

Hie forth and guess! There's nothing to lose!

View Poll: #5841

LJ version is here but please only answer in one location :D

comments

Okay, this is driving me crazy.

O internets of many thinkingnesses, what is your opinion on drinking alcohol while sick?

For purposes of the poll, "sick" means mildly so, lungs and throat only. Feeling like crap with mucus for fun. It does not include serious illness or stomach and intestinal bugs.

Also, "drinking alcohol" does not mean getting drunk. Usual common sense moderation applies.

Also also, this is preferably considered in context of someone (of legal age) who likes occasional wine or rum or whatever. So "No because I never drink" / "No because all alcohol is bad" is not one of the options...

View Poll: #5302

comments

nano update

So here's the thing.

I have, as of last night, hit 30k words.

This is a good thing. I am willing to admit that. However, a) I hate the story like burning, b) I have run out of plot and words, and c) there is no way I can write 20k in the next week anyway.

So I am trying to figure out what to do.

View Poll: #5165

comments

Alas, I do not have any wacky anecdotes about Princess Cluelesspants of WTF to share today ... mainly because she doesn't work weekends and so I don't have to deal with her today. \o/ Amazingly, I am much more well-rested, and much perkier, and I do not think the timing is a coincidence.

...okay, it probably also isn't a coincidence that today was Farmer's Market and I now am the proud, if temporary, owner of some very sexy lettuce, some gorgeous tomatoes, an absolutely nummy loaf of challah, and more desserty stuff than I probably should have gotten but oh well. (There was a coffee stand, and a bakery next to it. I was in line for coffee. The bakery people, sneakily, were giving out samples of their chocolate torte. I tasted it and went "homg must get" and so, when I was out of the coffee line, went over to the table with the intent of bringing back a chocolate torte thingie. I kind of got distracted. "Okay, three questions," I said to the guy. "What's that?" pointing to a pumpkin-colored thingummy with a swirl of cream cheese type frosting on top. He told me. (It was pumpkin-carrot, but otherwise to expectations.) "Shit," I said, knowing I would have to get one. "Okay, what's that?" pointing to some other sort of thingie. He told me. (It was a key lime somethingorother.) "Shit," I said, for the same reason. "And the thing you were giving samples of?" He pointed to it. "Okay," I said, giving in to the inevitable, "I'll take one of each." (It's not as bad when I have roommates to share it with.) The key lime thingum was packaged separately, and then he had a box for the pumpkin carrot thing and the chocolate thing, and he threw in I have nfi what it was but probably evil and delicious, because "we can't have the box be unbalanced," and I was grinning like an idiot but I didn't really care, and I have all this yummy stuff and omg.

*pauses to breathe*

Also, I had coffee. But it's not really noticeable... *pretends leg isn't jittering* *innocent face*

Anyway, I was, on the way back, thinking about knitting dischloth / washcloth / somethingcloth thingies with fannish themes. I mean, I've seen several doctor who designs (a Blink one, a tardis, a dalek, there are probably others), and I'm sure there are star trek designs, and I could do a series of Stargate ones based on gate addresses, and and and. And I'm sitting here going "okay, you do not need more washcloths, really you don't", but that led me to the epically perky and wildly optimistic point of "hey, you could sell them on etsy or something".

This, combined with the fact that I want to start doing wire wrapping just for fun (painful fun, I don't know what the attraction is, but it's there), ditto for selling it on etsy-or-whatever because there's no real way that I could use a bunch of wire wrapped stuff, and it's all impractical as hell and my work isn't professional-looking enough for anyone to want to buy it and the practical pessimistic part of me is going "... thwap" because of this, and the six year old lemonade stand owner part of me is going "but it miiiiight work" and I have too many voices in my head.

(I also have not written this week's brigits flame entry. Speaking of voices in my head. Ahem.)

So, a quick random poll:

View Poll: #3226

Also, unrelatedly, jmtorres has plotbunnied me with serial-killer!Winchesters. (well, seriously amoral Winchesters. The sort that still fight monsters and things-that-go-bump, but really don't care about saving people, and, depending on how dark the whirly kaleidoscope of amoral!Winchesters in my head is, actively <del>kill</del> play with the victims they rescued, under the theory that they were going to be dead anyway). It is in the fun squishy play-doh stage of storymaking right now where I'm just having fun poking and squoozing and seeing what happens.

comments

To go or not to go, that is the question

I am trying to figure out what to do about choir today, given all the chair problems. My primary chair goes about two centimeters an hour -- okay, that's maybe an exaggeration, but not by much -- and taking the bus seems kind of risky, not to mention the fact that it will probably take me half an hour to cross campus from the bus terminal to where rehearsal is. My backup chair runs okay now that it has batteries, but I can't really access most of the functions since it was designed around my mobility situation seven-or-so years ago, and it's uncomfortable as hell.

So, my options, as far as I can figure them, are these:

1) Switch back to the old chair for choir, and take the bus route. Advantage: I'm actually at rehearsal, and I don't get frustrated with the speed of the chair. Disadvantage: My midday aide isn't great at between-chair transfers, and the chair is really fucking uncomfortable.

2) Stay in the new chair, and take the bus route, allowing lots of extra time. Advantage: Again, am at rehearsal. Disadvantage: Lots more time out in the cold, plus I am utterly screwed if I mis-time it and miss the bus, and I am liable to get in a punching-things-in-face mood again because of the fucking chair.

3) Stay home from rehearsal, and email the conductor and explain I'm having chair malfunction. Advantage: I stay warmer, and way less cranky. Disadvantage: I'm not at rehearsal (although I do tend to pick things up fairly quickly, so it probably doesn't matter in the long run).

View Poll: #2078

comments

...since I'm doing flisty clean-up anyway...

This entry is mainly about my LJ flist, but it's posted on DW only. This amuses me, even though I have a very good reason for it.

Okay, so, basically, I'm trying to figure out how to reduce confusion between my DW circle page (which I have not yet found a name for that works for me) and my LJ flist. So, a poll, for DW peeps (cue marshmallow noises).

The first one is about how you are posting, and basically affects how I will read your LJ journal -- I will be doing different things depending on whether the LJ account has entries or comments that the DW version doesn't have.

The second one is about how you are reading, specifically where you are getting my entries from.

(The third is because I am easily confuzzled. And the fourth is because I'm kind of dorky.)

This poll really only applies to people who are on my LiveJournal flist; if I only have contact with you through DW, feel free to ignore the poll, or just answer the last question.

View Poll: LJ and DW and bears, oh my

(ETA: ... *facepalm* eat, not ear.)

comments
