"In bad shape?" she finishes.
Rough, humorless laughter escapes him. "El, he had a gun."
"Did he fire it?"
"He wanted to." It wasn't an answer. "No. But he would have, if--" He doesn't finish. "He would have, and it would have destroyed him. And I can't--"
"You'll figure something out."
"Not this time," Peter says bleakly. "God, El. How do you save someone when he doesn't want to be saved?"
It's not a question she can answer, so she just holds him tight.
