December meme, day 4 ... two days late

Day 4: Favorite comfort food?

Grilled cheese, definitely. Basic (bread, plus a nice proper cheese -- cheddar, cheddar with mozzarella for stringiness, or pepper jack) is comfortiest, but added bacon never goes amiss.

(Other sorts of grilled cheese -- like the "I can hear my arteries whimpering" one my roommate made once that was cream cheese plus at least two other kinds of cheese plus bacon plus buffalo chicken, possibly plus jalapeƱos, that had to be put in the oven rather than done in a frypan because it was too stuffed to flip -- are definitely yummy but are not the same sort of comfort food.)

Second comfortiest is probably pizza, but it has to have a good crust. (And decent toppings, but those are easier to find.)

There's a five-or-six-store local chain that's just grilled cheese sandwiches, (really good) shoestring fries, and tomato soup. BEST COMFORT FOOD PLACE EVER.

Comfort food is so fascinating to me!

Trufax: I didn't like grilled cheese sandwiches much even as a kid (I always asked for ham or turkey on mine along with the cheese), which possibly makes me the weirdest kid ever. At least in combination with my not liking mashed potatoes, either. :D

A fancy "grilled cheese" like your roommate's, however? That, I have no trouble believing was amazing. I do love hot sandwiches as a general category!

I am such a lover of grilled cheese. I do a thing with brie and fig jam on sourdough. I have neither fig jam nor brie right now but I'm thinking about it and feeling like I need to go to the store. Someone should do a study on why grilled cheese is so satisfying.
