Yuletide reveal
So, Yuletide authors are live, which means I can babble on about what I wrote \o/
First, there is my original story: A Duplicity of Pirates (Princess Bride).
As per usual, I matched my recipient on only one fandom (Princess Bride, obvs), though one of the other prompts was tempting enough that I may track down the source. But I didn't really have a way to do that, so Princess Bride it was!
The prompt was "The teases of a potential sequel have worn me down. I'd like to know what future lies in store for our intrepid heroes and/or villains."
My first reaction was "There have been teases of a potential sequel?" followed by "huh", followed by "Well, anyway, I can do that \o/".
Which I did.
(And the title, which is usually the hardest part, came surprisingly easily; #yuletide was talking about collective nouns, specifically as per hippos, but it got me thinking of what the collective noun for pirates might be.)
Due to a quirk of fate, I happened to get the story uploaded early. (Okay, so it was only a few days before deadline, but it was the second fic posted for yuletide this year.) And because of the way things worked, I promised myself that I wouldn't take any pinch hits, since I could write stories for the intriguing prompts without being the official writer.
Which, somehow, turned into responding to a pinch hit email, on the 21st. And actually getting it. Cue the standard reaction of "yay I got the pinch hit oh crap I need to write the story and I only have two days to write it and ack".
So, the second story: Chasing Shadows (Earthsea)
The prompt for this one was "Ged/Vetch slash, in school or when he's an adult! Mentions of the Otak is love!" I had to reread Wizard of Earthsea, and then read it again to take notes on what happened and where, but that was hardly a hardship.
...except for the fact that it took me a while to track down my copy of the book. *headdesk* (I did find it eventually.)
I had also, by this point, taken to flagging interesting-looking pinch-hit requests, not to be the official pinch-hitter necessarily, but to find things that I wrote. At about 5pm Eastern on the 24th, I found myself insanely deciding to see if I could get any of them written.
Which I did: Bittersweet (Beauty and the Beast, Disney version)
I had been watching a bunch of Disney movies, and BatB was one of them. I found myself dissatisfied; partly because of the age issue (as someone on my flist pointed out, if the rose lasts until he's 21, and they've been in enchanted form for ten years, the sorceress was punishing an eleven-year-old kid) and partly because of the ending (those who had been under the enchantment got what they wanted, but Belle didn't, really; she fell in love with the Beast, not with the prince).
So one of the pinch hits that comes through is for Beauty and the Beast: "I'd like a story where Beast doesn't change back to a human and he and Beauty still try to make it work."
And it occurred to me that, you know, I could write that, more or less, and kill two birds with one stone.
(disclaimer: no birds were harmed in the making of this fic)
