Feeling vaguely human again. Still testing positive for covid (and, apparently, flu B) but symptomatically better... well ok I'm sleeping a lot (12h, up from last week's 14h; at least that's my "lying in the dark with eyes closed" time, not necessarily literally asleep because brains are silly) and still feel constantly tired, but I have a voice again.

Wrist is improving but I'm taking things easy there; crossword is on computer (slower and awkwarder), Duolingo halfheartedly done on computer, other games mostly stopped.

Funny, I'd been thinking I should reduce gaming time anyway 🙃 since it's mostly idle gaming where you check it and upgrade things and do busywork quests to unlock cute things but if you sit down and think you're not really *doing* anything. Guess going from ~9h sleep to ~14h is a very effective strategy at going cold turkey with stuff, especially stuff that would have happened during the 5 hours now spent not awake.

Dreams have been their usual. Several involving creepy crawlies deets ) A couple dreams where my eyes keep closing, and in the attempt to fight that (because of course I'm fighting a shapeshifting shark taking the current form of a cat eel hybrid thing) I force my irl eyes open, waking me up. A bunch of dreams about choir rehearsals. One where I was waiting for my dad to pick me up and some guy put his hand on the back of my neck so I yelled that I was being abducted.

(This is of course sleep dreams, not "what I am doing with my life" dreams.)

This week I got myself a clock that a) has a nice big display, b) the option of colorshifting the display (currently a slow roygbiv fade rotation), and c) ability to project onto the ceiling (that sadly doesn't color-change, oh well). It means that when I wake up in the middle of the night I can tell what time it is without having to move. Yesterday I had a multi hour stretch of waking up every half hour...boo. Brains are silly. But the clock makes me ridiculously happy.

Yuletide story is creeping slowly along. I dithered sending it back for a different pinch hitter, given sick + carpal tunnel + haven't written anything in *mumble* years, but I still have time... that and a half-fleshed-out story. Whatever happens it'll technically be the best thing I wrote all year ... looool. (Haven't posted prompts on the "ph prompts here", won't until I definitely have a fill.)

Since authors have been revealed, I can say what I wrote:

Unmasked (4459 words) by isabeau
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Mulan (1998)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Fa Mulan/Li Shang, Fa Ping/Li Shang
Additional Tags: Yuletide, Canon Rewrite, Shang is a doofus, Canonical Character Death, emotions are hard, #Yulechat Challenge
Summary:

This is how the world actually works: instead of leading soldiers into battle, Shang is given command over a disorganized bunch of conscripted civilians who don't know the business end of a sword. Instead of fighting to defend China, he is stuck training these misfits into something resembling soldiers. And instead of being devoted to a wife or his job as a soldier, he is becoming attracted to one of his men.

I didn't actually intend to do Yuletide -- I didn't look through the fandoms, I didn't look through the letters, I didn't plan on writing treats -- but as always I'm on the pinch hit list, and when Linsky's came out I went for it, half assuming it would have been snagged (since they were bit the rarest of Yuletide fandoms). I was surprised to get it, but in a good way, and ... rewatching the movie had me realizing how much Shang goes through in a short time (though the timeline confuses the fuck out of me, because they train for like three days and then have a long?!?? march and then everything happens at once and how does time even work) so it was fun to play with that and also with how bad he is at emotions ("you fight good") and ... anyway. Much babble, sorry.
ysobel: (Default)
So I didn't do yuletide this year...

... except I did after all, because I actually snagged a ph, and then I got stories omg! Not one but twooooo and they are both made of awesome ♥

<capslock mode=squee>OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS THIS YEAR'S YULETIDE IS THE AWESOMEST EVER</capslock>

...ahem.

I got not one, not two, but three, THREE, lovely delicious perfect stories as gifts.

The Baker's Son and the Witch (3416 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Into the Woods - Sondheim/Lapine, Into the Woods (2014)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Baker/Cinderella (Into the Woods)
Characters: Baker's Son (Into the Woods), Cinderella (Into the Woods), original witch character
Additional Tags: Children, Childhood Friends, Witches, Fairy Tale Elements, Storytelling, Yuletide Treat, Pregnancy, Childbirth, Post-Canon
Summary: The Baker's son was a lad of twelve when he met his first witch. He had, strictly speaking, known one before, but it was widely agreed that, while a formative encounter for all involved, it couldn’t actually count since the Baker’s son didn’t remember anything, still being a rather doughy infant at the time.

Wherein a decade down the line, a new witch comes to town looking to make a new story.

This is the AWESOMEST Into The Woods sequel-fic to ever awesome. There is so much to love about it, I don't know where to begin. It adds in little pinches of Discworldesqueness, which is an added delight as far as I'm concerned. It is compatible with the movie version of ITW.

A Life Made of Moments (1063 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Into the Woods - Sondheim/Lapine
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Cinderella's Prince (Into the Woods), Rapunzel's Prince (Into the Woods)
Additional Tags: Childhood, Pre-Canon, Yuletide, Yuletide Treat
Summary: "I was raised to be charming, not sincere."

Baby princes -- excuse me, very grown up boy princes -- learning the ways of princing. As I think I said in my DYW letter, I have a weird obsession with the two Princes, and this is a perfect pre-canon glimpse of their lives growing up.

a string of colored beads (8893 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: The Little Mermaid (1989)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Ariel/Eric, Ursula/Eric, Attina/The Princess of Glowerhaven
Characters: Ariel, Eric, Ursula, Attina, The Princess of Glowerhaven
Additional Tags: Mind Control, Captivity, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-con, Political Marriage, Trauma Recovery
Summary: Perhaps the strength of this human kingdom could be increased, and bent one day toward the sea, its resources turned against her old enemy. King Triton feared the fish-eaters, feared their harpoons and nets. Perhaps he was right to be afraid.

This one, oh goodness, where to start. Deliciously long, deliciously ... Well, delicious. Mind control and the effects thereof, some lovely relationship stuff, sign language, f/f, consequences, recovering from trauma, failing to recover from trauma, escapes, true love, miracles... Er, okay, I maybe drifted into Princess Bride territory by the end. But seriously, this fic is a lot of things I like in one very solid package.

I was overwhelmed with delight at having three stories; I was even giddier after reading them. I could not imagine anything that I would have wanted more.

Assignments have gone out!

...mine is a wonderful assignment and a wonderful letter that I had flagged for possible treatage; I am bearsing a little about canon review, but I have time and stuffs and *excited flail*
ysobel: (Default)
Dear Yuletide person:

Hi! I am ridiculously happy you are writing for me :D You probably don't know me, so here's some info on what I like and don't like when it comes to exchange fic.

General preferences )

Requested Fandoms: Into the Woods (play), Glitch, Windrose Chronicles, The Little Mermaid (Disney) )

Please note: I am firmly in the camp of "optional details are OPTIONAL". Some writers find unspecified "any" requests to be vague and scary, so I wanted to provide at least some info if useful. I am in no way implying that these are the only topics that will make me happy. Any of the requested fandoms will be equally awesome; anything you chose to write, regardless of whether or not I've mentioned it, will be equally awesome.

So perhaps most important, write something you enjoy!
ysobel: (Default)
Health update: still hate side effects. Hard to tell if the flare up is behaving, because it was a lot quieter while I was on the burst of prednisone but now that I'm tapering it's getting cranky again. I think the low-level adrenaline rush type feeling is the antibiotic, not the prednisone, just based in when it's kicking in, but I don't know which to blame for the lack of concentration or the extreme jitteriness.

At least I got a round of crochet done today. Woo.

(Also took Yahtzee for a nice long walk, figuring that I was going to be hot and sweaty and uncomfortable regardless of where I was, and so I might as well be hot and sweaty and uncomfortable and getting him some exercise. And sniffing. Sniffing is a very important part of his leisure walks. I think he was not displeased by the plan.)

Duolingo update: 300 day streak ftw. Mostly German -- I tried poking idly at French for a while but everything sounds the same D: (not *literally* everything of course, but it takes some adjusting to), and I will hop on Russian once they release it to beta

Yuletide update: I can only think of two things to request, one of which is sort of my "I request this a lot because I can never get enough" repeats. I might nom the two fandoms (and relevant characters) just so they're there, but I don't know whether I'll be signing up. Which feels odd. Otoh, I haven't been writing much anyway, and I should probably drop out of GYWO for this year since I was already way behind and haven't made any progress in months, but there is always the possibility of Yuletide-fueled catching up.
ysobel: (Default)
So ... this year was kind of crazy, in the best way possible. I had a flood of creativity right around the time Dear Yuletide Writer letters came out, so I ended up a) making a spreadsheet of people I wanted to write for, because I actually had writing mojo and b) writing a lot.

I mean, not a lot by overall fandom standards, but it was 3k worth of fic spread over eight fics, and one of them turned into the longest fic I've written for YT -- over twice as long as the second longest, which was back in 2005 -- and the third longest fic I have on AO3, and another was the third longest fic I've ever written for YT, and given that a vast majority of the YT fics I've done, as well as all challenge fics in the last few years, have skated barely above the 1k minimum? It's pretty damn impressive.

Plus, I am happy with everything I wrote. Every damn thing.

#

My assignment matched me on La Belle et la Bête | Beauty and the Beast, and my recip's DYW letter encouraged retellings with variations. And I played with things for a while, but the idea I kept coming back to, the story I apparently wanted to tell, was basically ace lesbian PoC, and so that's the story I ended up writing.

For always, forever (7625 words) by isabeau
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: La Belle et la Bête | Beauty and the Beast
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Belle/La Bête | Beast/Beauty (La Belle et la Bête)
Additional Tags: Fairy Tale Retellings, Lesbian Character, Female Character of Color
Summary: A retelling of the story where things are not always as they seem

#

I also snagged a pinch hit fairly immediately, because it was someone on my list of to-(maybe)-write-treats-for. I subsequently did a bit of private flailing because omg what if I get things wrong, but I had a good cheerleader (hi mel!) and a good beta (hi rsf!) and I am very pleased with how it turned out.

The Middle Path (2666 words) by isabeau
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Ram Dass

And then there were the random but full-length treats, that I wrote just for the pleasure of writing.

Gambit (1163 words) by isabeau

Fandom: Chess (Board Game)

Characters: Pawn (Chess), Queen (Chess)

Frog And Toad Write Fic (1113 words) by Frog and Toad
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Frog and Toad - Arnold Lobel
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Toad (Frog and Toad), Frog (Frog and Toad)
Additional Tags: Characters Writing Fanfiction, Yuletide Is Awesome

So that's it for the full-length treats ... but there are also Madness treats.

I am Groot (Groot's Story) (78 words) by isabeau

Fandom: Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Groot (Marvel)
Additional Tags: I Am Groot, Yuletide Treat
Summary: Groot's perspective on Guardians of the Galaxy.

That one ... ended up being wildly popular. I'm torn between squee and wanting to hide in pleased embarrassment. \o/ (And it now has a non-hovertext version; I didn't think of access issues until after the collection closed, and then I couldn't figure out a way to do it un-anonly.)

The Cost of Life (300 words) by isabeau
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Guardians of the Galaxy (Movies)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Peter Quill, Meredith Quill

Yuletide is up whee! I've been too busy with family stuff to do more than read the gifts I got (two! two gifts ahahaha *thunder*), but I wanted to share, because sharing is in the spirit of Yuletide.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/2774939 - Forever fic, Abe and Henry and two different car accidents, and how Abe found out Henry's secret.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/2768960 - Haven threesome h/c fic of adorableness.

I want to gush about both, but today has been draining enough that I am out of words. The best I can do is that I am quite delighted with both and want to cuddle them forever. (And neither one seems to be spoilery for recent episodes.). If you are familiar with either canon, go read.

Dear authors, if you are stalking my journal, I <3 you so very much. Er, for the stories, I mean, not for the stalking per se.

#

And speaking of family stuff, I've gotten to spend the last few days with my sister and baby niecelet, and said niecelet is the cutest baby ever omg.

As of today
Words Written Today: 3,789 (!), mostly blog
Total Words Written: 28,987

WPD to hit 50k by the end of the month: 1911

Words on Project A, aka autobiographical blog: 13,712
Words on Project B, aka Yuletide: 7,874 (includes three completed stories, most of a 4th that is at 3619 words, and parts of three others)

Words of fiction written in all of 2012 to present (excluding this): 8970, over 9 stories

You guys. I have written almost as much pure fiction in the last 19 days as in the previous 3 years combined. And one of the stories I have done for Project B is literally the longest I have ever written for Yuletide (second longest being 2959 words in 2005) and the longest thing of fiction I have written since Jul 2011.

Project C, which makes up the other 7kish of the wordcount, is a little cheatingier since it's not True Writing -- Project A is my own memories but in narrative form, Project B is definitely fic, but C is a catchall category, mostly used for days when I've made insufficient progress (or none at all) on the other two, and it's still Things What I Have Written. (And not even just lyrics to les mis typed out over and over again, which I have considered sometimes.)

It's not a novel. But considering that I've basically been in a writing drought for several years, this is pretty damn impressive output.

I am not displeased.

(Except for the perfectionist part of me that will only be satisfied if I hit 50k, and is grumbling about how it's not actually a novel and so doesn't really count. But that part of me can stfu.)
ysobel: (Default)
I am sort of behind on nano words (600-odd the last two days and less than 400 today, which is one day's "target" spread over three days)

BUT

a) my Yuletide assignment story is now the longest fic I've ever written for Yuletide, and it's still not done

b) I have written something every day so far

d) I have maintained my duolingo streak (445 days and counting)

e) most awesomely, my sister has successfully made a tiny human, and I got to go down and visit them today. It's the first time I've held a baby that I can recall, definitely the first time I've held one less than 24 hours old, and -- because I am totally not biased or anything -- she is the cutest baby ever omg. And tilting back with a nice warm sleepy burrito baby on my chest reminds me a lot of the way Suri used to be, except less purry and more squeaky.

f) I am terrified that she isn't going to like me, especially since I can't really physically interact with her at all, but this is more under the category of "stupid brain tricks" (and also "why I would make a really bad mother")

g) today's adventures are going to leave me with a major spoon deficit tomorrow, yikes. And it is hard to write without spoons
