misc

* today is the last day of Canine Companions' livestreaming puppycam. F litter, lab/golden cross, six black and one yellow, 7-8 weeks old. Super cute, despite video glitches. I want a cuddle pile of puppy...

* I want to figure out how to art-ify my D&D characters, but a) I can't ever figure out clothes, b) faces are hard, and c) my last two aren't even humanish -- current character, Ayla, is an owlin monk, and my previous character, Ek-ko-ao, was a xotlxotl [basically humanoid axolotl] drakewarden ranger. I tend not to do actual humans, but elves can be drawn as slender pointy-eared humans, and dwarves and halflings also are human-faced. I had trouble trying to draw a previous character (Bria, half-orc ranger with a pet velociraptor) partly because of jawline and teeth, though to be fair I couldn't even get my dwarf fighter drawn, so gah.

* also my weekly alphabet art project didn't get very far lulz. half-finished dragonfly is still half finished ...

* how the fuck is it almost April, wtf

* which also means it's almost Phoebe's bday \o/

* my dog poem book idea is one poem closer to completion -- 7 down, 13 to go.

Dog thoughts

Yesterday I watched (via live stream) the most recent Canine Companions graduation. Two people I know, Phoebe's puppy raiser and then someone who's been helping me with her nails but is at this point also a friend, have puppies that were graduating, so I had extra motivation... but honestly, between the parade of dogs that are matriculating in for professional training and the new person-dog teams, it's adorable af regardless.

It's also gotten me thinking about my own training, the one just about two years ago (almost exactly-- graduation anniversary is the 10th) with Phoebe and the one 13 years ago with Yahtzee. I don't remember much from the Y one except for pieces, like him being so happy to see me again during graduation that he did a spontaneous Lap. I remember more about the P one, like her licking my elbow to say hi the second morning, and the absolute wiggly joy of her first night in my dorm room with me when she found a ball, and the first weekend home with her where she figured out that she could get me to play by putting a toy in my lap...

(I sometimes wonder if I'm good enough for her, but that's probably my insecurities talking, lol)

Idk, just having some dog feelings over here...

yay: apartment maintenance replaced fridge/freezer unit. (Ended up tossing like half the freezer contents -- especially seafood and opened meats -- to be safe.)

not yay: Phoebe threw up three times overnight and three times so far today. She's lower energy but still alert; I'm taking her into the vet tomorrow, after phone consult with emergency vet peeps (including a rerun of "is it *black* black or just dark"?). Read more... )

wtflol: I have temporary rainbow tattoos on my cheeks from going to Pride on Saturday. My mom's first reaction: "Those aren't REAL, are they?!" Because a 40-odd-yo tattooless person is going to go for full-color face tattoos as their first?? Like, I'm pretty sure most reputable tattoo artists won't even *do* face as a first tattoo location.

Went to the local Pride festival thingie today. Some booths had free stuff, usually "spin the wheel" -- stickers, flags, buttons, in one case butt-themed (not even sexual; they were promoting colon health), and various candies. Others were selling-- I was tempted by many things but got two, a 3D-printed dragon and stud earrings that were purple and have Snoopy (and a tiny Woodstock) with a pride flag. 🏳️‍🌈

I got a bit sunburnt-- though at least I had a hat! -- and since the whole thing was on grass and getting back up to pavement was a bit higher than my chair liked, I got a bit stuck, but the Sac Gay Men's Chorus had just sung and a couple buff SGMC guys saw me and came to help. Swoon.

In other news, Phoebewise, I have discovered two things:

1. If she eats enough mulberries, her poop comes out black the next day

(Yes there is a very local mulberry tree with ripe berries, how did you guess?)

2. She goes bonkers at laser pointers. Like, cat level bonkers. I'm trying to figure out if I should take advantage of this for getting her exercise on hot days*, or if it'll just frustrate her because she can't eat it.

* did I mention that 2-3 days next week will be over 100 (37.8 for Celsius peeps)? I didn't give the weather permission to do that.

...did I also mention our freezer isn't actually freezing? I had maintenance come in a couple days ago and they couldn't find anything but suggested we do a few things to get improved air circulation, but it's gotten worse instead of better -- ice cream has gone from "soft-serve consistency" earlier this week to "soup". Meh.

Various & sundry

1. I've officially had Phoebe for a year now. Doesn't seem that long, somehow. She is still the bestest girl. (Standard disclaimer that other dogs may also be bestest; ties are acceptable here.)

1b. Her puppy raiser came for a visit today :) Phoebe was of course extremely happy to see her. (Yahtzee made sure he got a share of the attention, lol.)

2. Having wheelchair issues again... Read more... )

2b. ...and the new wheelchair is still not quite usable. It's better than it was earlier in the Chair Saga, but the joystick is in an entirely bad place, so reaching the joystick is awkward and painful, and I can't reach the buttons. Sigh. I have a call in to NoMotion (UnMotion?) for both issues, but I've had the chair in my possession since September (with the whole saga going back to May of 2022) so not holding my breath.

3. Inflicting the "Vindaloo" football (Brit.) song on my aides has the unfortunate consequence of re-earworming me too, but that's an acceptable cost for, uh, sharing the love, lol

4. For anyone who likes reading police/detectiv procedurals, I'm really enjoying the series starting with Angel Maker. (Technically there are earlier books with the main character, Jamie Johansson, but AM is the one I started with). It's set in Sweden, with a female lead, and it's good imo.

5. I still like having a shaved/ buzzed head.

6. The art thing I'm doing -- one sketch/drawing a day of items starting with a for the first week, b for the second, c for the third, etc -- is working nicely. Read more... ) I'm up to G now, woo.

7. Trader Joe's has some extremely delicious brookies. I'm kind of addicted (only not really). Also their mini ice cream cones are amazing, but I've known that for a while.

8. Tried a new cpap mask to see if it would be easier. Read more... )

9. Sorry I keep being so bad at reading DW and therefore have no clue what's being happening with y'all. It's not y'all, I promise! I just... forget it exists?

10. This took an hour to type up. Sigh. Hate how slow typing is these days. And typing on tablet (stylus plus thumbs on touchscreen) is faster than computer typing (mouse clicking on virtual keyboard).

DOG

Okay so I'm not going to upload tons of pictures (as much as I love DW, image upload/post process is kinda annoying) BUT.

DW peeps, meet Phoebe! (Formally Phoebe VII, because at some point names get reused.)

A pale-yellow lab looks at the camera

She is a Very Good Girl, though I'm not entirely used to young-dog energy any more.

A pale-yellow lab looking relaxed and happy

She's a lab-golden mix, 1/4 golden and 3/4 lab. Her face has more of the golden smooshiness to it, compared to the more blocky lab head, and she sheds something fierce, and she gets drooly when there's food, and I love her.

More photos on Twitter and Facebook (sorry for the wonky link, I'll try to fix tomorrow) for anyone interested.
