My inner twelve-year-old is going *absolutely nuts* over the whole Valdemar fusion. Because, I mean, straight XMFC is one thing (that I am highly addicted to omg), but put them in Valdemar and suddenly it's *~*lifebonds*~* and *~*epic twu wuv*~* and *~*destiny*~* and all sorts of ridiculous unrealistic *~*squee*~*.

So I have an inner twelve year old going ":D :D :D :D wheeeeeeeeeeee :D :D :D :D :D" and my inner editor sort is all "...I am going to just ignore all this lalala" and it's generally awesome and way too much fun \o/

I have to reread the Vanyel era books (oh the HORROR however shall I cope /swoons dramatically/) to get the *~*proper feel*~* and all, but I've worked some stuff out already.

* Already known: Charles is a Companion. Need I say more? (I think not.) Though Charles isn't really a Companiony sort of name.

* Already known: he will end up Choosing, and *~*lifebonding*~* with, Erik.

* Erik is ... hrm. Somewhat of a cipher at this point. I haven't figured out his primary Gift, because it's not really Fetching; I suppose he could be an untrained Mage with an affinity towards metal? But there's not so much metal in the Valdemar universe, so idk. Probably not from Valdemar per se, but a neighboring something.

* Shaw is a mage, with a focus on energy manipulation

* Raven, who decided to be part of this whole thing, is a Herald-trainee with a gift of illusion/projection; the Companions know what her 'true form' looks like but she has a different default appearance. Friends with Charles and other Companions, becomes friend to Erik once he's at the Collegium.

* I don't have a equivalence for the submarine scene. I want something with a similar feel, but submarines are kind of not very useful in a Valdemar-type setting. Maybe fire instead of water? But definitely want a parallel to the Erik-Charles interaction.

* maybe repercussions of Gala's repudiation, and parallels to Erik's need for revenge on Shaw? (Companion!Charles is of course falling over himself promising never to leave Erik, never do that to him, lovelovelove, etc.)

* ETA, copied here so I don't lose it, my comment from the kinkmeme thread: "now I have Companion!Charles in my head being all blue-eyed and pretty and going /I am just like you, Erik/ and not-yet-a-Herald!Erik going "......wtfffff you are a TALKING HORSE you are nothing like me" and C!Charles going "...telepathic, not talking; Companion, not horse; nuances. Otherwise we are quite similar really" and nyaH!Erik giving him a -_- look, and and and..."

In mostly unrelated news, I have Committed Porn (it's xmfc erik/charles, hence only mostly unrelated, but it's not part of the same project), but I am feeling insecure about it. The fact that it's anon on the kinkmeme doesn't help; I can't tell whether the lack of comments is because it's no good or because it's gotten lost. Anyone feel like taking a peek and telling me whether I should post it to AO3 or let it be?

Erik could be a Mage-Smith, perhaps? Very rare, of course, so no one will have recognized it before he's Chosen.

jenphalian is all a-squee about your enthusiasm in this fic. I should probably watch XMFC so that I can commence the proper amount of delight as well; I'm currently peering with great interest but not actually levitating through handflapping.

Oooh, I can totally see Herald!Erik as a Fetching+Farsight sort (since he can detect metal at long range ---> Farsight); I see no problem with fudging the telekinesis/metallophilia line for a man who can work with such trace amounts as the iron in your blood; looked at on that micro-scale, there's metal in just about everything, from dirt to people and animals to plants to seaawater to any dyed human-made artefact (most dyes required soaking/boiling in metal pots, so surely some of the metal would have got into it, too! And many were fixed with potash, which contains the metal potassium.)

Oooorr, you could fudge the magnetism/metal line (because really, if he can only manipulate metals through magnetism, he shouldn't be able to affect things like gold and copper that don't react to magnets, so his gift is only for SOME metals/really about magnetic fields/energy) and just give him the Mage-Gift, which is all about manipulating energy at a distance through one's will.

(Give him a metallic focus-stone?)
