ysobel: X-Men First Class icon, with Charles and Erik (xmfc)
[personal profile] ysobel
After rewatching the first x-men movie, I am more and more convinced that xmfc falls more on the side of reboot than prequel.

For one thing, there are details that don't match up:

- storm, jean, and scott as (some of) charles' first students -- granted, one could argue that the xmfc kids aren't really students because it's not a school yet, but still

- "because [erik] helped me build [cerebro]" -- and while it's quite possible that he did help with the building of the new cerebro, that doesn't quite mesh with hank being the one to create the first prototupe (which, I know, goes against the standard canon that charles built cerebro, so whatever)

- rumors of mutants that can access minds etc, when by the end of xmfc cia has proof via moira's mindwipe

- charles being mystified about the helmet of dooom

For another, there's a touch too much .. recycling? of ideas, of base concepts. Of the beginning of the human mutant war, and the timing thereof (the first xmen movie is "not too distant future" and treats mutants as a fairly newly-known-about phenomenon, xmfc is in the 60s). Of Erik's cynicism about said war brewing. The bit about Erik turning human weapons against their wielders (though granted I'm sure he does that a lot; and "You homo sapiens and your guns" kind of made me crack up a bit).

For a third, I don't see xmfc!erik or xmfc!raven being willing to come that close to killing charles (via cerebro poisoning).

I did have to laugh, though, at some of the design elements. Particularly cerebro: gigantic sphere, walkway to the center that is barely wider than Charles' wheelchair, and a circular platform that has barely enough radius for a chair to turn around; and not very much in the way of barriers to keep people from falling off. Or rolling off.

Also, wtf is it with giving Charles a super duper uncomfortable wheelchair? THERE ARE THINGS KNOWN AS CUSHIONS, Y'ALL.

In other news, I made a teensy bit of progress on a fic last night ... only to realize that what I'd written can't happen, because a) it takes place shortly after Cuba, b) Erik and Emma are working together -- both true for the whole fic, which is a bit awkward, although I deliberately left the timing vague -- but c) the new bits involved Moira pre-mindwipe.

Headdesk.

(I am tempted to just go oh-what-the-hell and write it anyway, consistency be damned. I mean, I could maybe have one of the kids fill in for Moira, but they don't have the right sort of authority level, and the timeline is already fucked enough as it is, given a and b.)

In other other news, my raven/angel k_b fill is getting sidetracked by issues involved with post-xmfc character/plot gunk, which is the only plausible option unless I go with the "Angel never goes with Shaw" AU option.
