went to the movies today. julie & julia. good movie. made me horribly fucking depressed about what i'm doing with my life.
and then went from there to pick up my laptop. ... which, y'know, cheered me up so much. (not really.)
the good news is that the hard drive was under warranty so it wasn't all that expensive (and I got a bigger hard drive out of the deal). the bad news is that they weren't able to salvage anything whatsoever off the other computer, and while I do have a backup, it's seriously old (I sort of ran out of space; I think I need to have a 'media files' external hard drive separate from my backup ehd) and plus it was on the desk so it might be just as dead.
and if that's true then i've lost ... *flail* not everything. programs can be downloaded -- if I have the registration information -- but, fuck. all of the video files I had (including the full season of merlin, doctor who, torchwood, and several key s3/s4 stargate episodes, blood ties, original bsg). all of the music files (*some* of which are still on my iPod, but you can't upload from iPods) which in some cases can be re-imported but in other cases were downloads or fanmix-type things or Totally Legal No Really downloads or borrowed CDs or CDs that I've since lost. all of my fic and story drafts and notes, including the one origfic story that was theoretically publishable if I ever got up the nerve to send it out. all of the email from the past god knows how many years. all of the dreamhack-related notes and files and instructions. all of the images i'd collected, because of the Pretty or because I wanted to use them as references for art stuff. all of the (free) knitting patterns i'd saved, many of which are no longer available. all of my bookmarks and shortcuts and ...
...
... it's not the end of the world.
if I tell myself that enough, maybe I'll even believe it.
