I think the holidays get more fraught the older we get, the more aware we are of the background to everything. The only thing that brings me comfort about it is that just about everyone has some kind of "light in the middle of the darkest part of the year" day or celebration to mark the turning of the world. The details and interpretations of that have gone every which way, been changed, commandeered, altered, commercialized, dragged through the centuries. I hope you can find something in all of it that makes you happy, even if it is coming home after unsatisfying family time to have a peaceful few hours.
