My dreams last night involved some sort of ninjas-vs-pirates thing. Two of us (not sure who 'us' was, possibly NCIS because this whole thing was on a boat) were sent undercover, and I was assigned to the ninjas, and apparently wearing the ninja uniform (all-black full-body suit with cool fingertip pads that could light up different colors, and a frilly high collar that hid the lower half of your face) was enough to let me in to the rather well-marked ninja room club thing.

Nothing ever happened with the pirates after that. Although I did stick with the ninja training and eventually graduated, and the proper ninja costume included an invisibility cloak. Which was awesome.

Attempt #1 at the Althea socks, using long dpns, was ... less than successful. Bamboo that thin is too flexible for the way I currently knit. And plus, I haven't figured out how to purl. (I saw a very nice video that looked totally workable until I realized they were using the thumb of the other hand to hold the yarn in place for purling. Which ... is pretty much what I *can't* do.) Since the pattern is about 4/5ths purling, that would have gotten interesting.

So I moved to attempt #2, using the sock loom. For which the only toe I know how to do is short-row, which I dislike, but eh, whatever. The pattern is written for over 60 stitches, which is fairly reasonable-sounding, so I dutifully cast onto 30 pegs and start short-rowing down and back up. And when I finished that I decided it would be worthwhile to see what the fit looked like, so I very painstakingly put a safety pin on all 30 active loops, so I could take it off the loom without losing stitches.

And, er.

It is WAY too big. Freakishly big. Nice-size-for-a-Christmas-stocking big.

;_;

(It curls very prettily and seductively into a sock-toe crescent shape of the proper size, but the border edge of a short-row toe lies flat, not all curled up.)

So, I can either: keep going and find someone with bigger feet to give the socks to (not likely, since I want these for myself); start over and aim for 50 sts (the lace pattern is a repeat of 10) and see if that works better; try using normal-length metal dpns, which may or may not work and probably will be painful; or give up in frustration.

Option D is awfully tempting :(
