...speaking as someone who is not really all that into comics (heresy, I know), GotG a) is really fucking fun, and b) does not seem to require epic comic knowledge in order to enjoy.
I mean, yes, I'm sure that parts of it had tons more relevance for comicsverse fen. But I did not feel like I was missing necessary backstory. It was just *fun*.
Also, I ♥ Groot.
My mom asked what it was about; I flailed a bit and then described it as a comic-er version of Firefly as done by Marvel.
I am left after the fact with a nagging feeling of disquiet that I can't quite express properly, a feeling of ... grah I can't *express* it. Derivative, sort of. Similarity to Avengers, I guess? Partly the "assemble team of heroes from disparate backgrounds", partly the "moment where everything looks completely fucked and everyone is defeated and we get a sad-soundtracked montage of how defeated everyone is" partway through, partly the climactic battle over the big city... I don't know.
But anyway. Definitely liking the movie. Rocket stole my heart more than I was expecting, Groot was awesome, the characters were not as assholeish as I expected (one of the early trailers left me with the feeling of "assholes save theworld galaxy" and I don't like assholes who are assholes for the sake of assholedom, but I don't mind characters who are ... I don't even know, like, chaotic neutral?
Also, inexact quote from memory, "I look around and I see a bunch of losers. [beat] I mean, people who have lost stuff." Hee.

But they also inherited Tony Stark for awhile, so really - there is cross pollination.)
