Okay so I am *cracking the fuck up*

so I had this revelation a while ago that I might have either EDS or some similar hypermobility, because of things I remember doing as a kid that seemed perfectly normal but apparently aren't, but how the fuck can you tell because I'm basically immobile so any hypermobility tests wouldn't work

...today my mom comes in and we're talking and she mentions something for me to look up... "aylers denforth? I think it's a-h-l--" and I go "e h l, actually. ehlers-danlos." "?????? how do you know about it?" "I have friends that have eds."

and anyway it turns out that, like

both of my mom's sisters have been diagnosed with eds

and several of my cousins on that side

and her mom might have probably had it and just never got diagnosed

and she might have it

and I just kind of lost it laughing

(and then I had to explain why)

but yes. Probability that I actually do have EDS just ratcheted way up.

so a couple weeks ago --

Me: *explaining some thing about somebody's parent* "--and so since they have EDS--"
Purple: "Oh, your friend Rah?"
Me: "Noooo, Rah's the lesbian in Baltimore, this is --"
Purple, boggling visibly: "How many of these friends do you *have*????"
Me: "I know a *lot* of people."

This is every conversation with my husband and mom ever in which I mention my friends, pretty much. :)

The other family-history-of disease she wanted me to look up was Reynaud's.

"Oh, I've heard of that one too."
"How???"
"...I know people with it?"
"Do you belong to some sort of weird-diseases website?"

I thought of DW and the proportion of zebras and considered answering "yes but only accidentally".

Ah! That's the one that my friend Ginger was diagnosed with in high school, I think, and I believe one of the UKfish and fishbaby has it as well.

I was just, on Wednesday, talking with a friend of mine (who has EDS) that if the damn thing is as rare as people keep telling her, there's something really odd going on with distribtions that I know 6 - well - now 7 - folks with it.

I suspect that there is a scale of severity and that not everyone who has it gets diagnosed -- so it's not as rare as it appears, but also with the internet giving exposure to different medical conditions, more people are getting diagnosed. (And more people are being vocal about having it.)

Personally I don't have any actual proof that I have it, especially since a lot of the testing involves hypermobility measurements that are kind of impossible for me, but it would explain a lot of things. And it amuses the hell out of me...
