ysobelBeauty and the Beast (animated) is one of my favorite Disney movies, and one of my comfort rewatches. So I have been ... skeptical ... about the live action version. Sma potential for awesome, huge potential for messing shit up.
It's on Netflix. So I decided to bite the proverbial bullet and watch.
I got as far as the first song before I switched to something else.
okay, so.
I'm ambivalent about showing the curse moment and the pre-curse Prince. The animated version, with the stained glass illustration, gave it more of a fairy-tale feeling. But it did make it clear that he wasn't a kid when enchanted -- and also threw in a line about the enchantment included people forgetting them.
But the first song. I just. I can't.
Biggest point: why the *fuck* was the "it's my favorite part because, you'll see--" bit not spoken to sheep, but just randomly spoken (well, sung) as she wanders? She's not telling *herself* that it's her favorite part. She's not even talking to villagers (the impression in the animated version is that at least the sheep will listen to her). Who is she talking to????
Point: She's interacting with the villagers as they sing about how she always has her nose in a book. Um?
Point: She comes across as mean and snobbish -- the animated version comes across as fond (but dreaming of bigger adventures), but this is ... she insults the baker to his face, she walks across laundry areas, she generally has an "Im too good for this place" attitude.
On the plus side, the library is a library and not a bookstore. And there's racial diversity woo?
Oh, but Gastón not knowing what "Je ne sais quoi" means is just *ezplodes* THEY'RE IN FUCKING FRANCE how does he not--
Ahem.
Also, Gastón was not nearly oafish enough. Mean, yes, but.
Grumble.
I am going to watch more of this, but there is only so much I can take at a time.
Meanwhile I will go back to thinking about my not-pretty Beauty and her possibly-autistic Beast...
