I've been having My Grandfathers Clock going though my head

(I was going to dig up a YouTube video to embed, for those not familiar with the song, but then I fell down a victor borge rabbit hole. YouTube is dangerous.)

and I kind of want to read a story where, like, the clock *is* the grandfather, somehow, or his soul, or the result of some sort of deal

(what kind of deal do you make with a clock? A timely one...)

or something, because for one thing who the hell goes shopping for a clock when their child is being born, and for another did it *always* weigh exactly the same as him (and therefore grew as he did) or just no more than he ever weighed in the speaker's lifetime, and for a third there's the whole stopping thing, and, like

did the clock talk to him as a kid

was the clock in love with him and died of heartbreak

like, what

Cecilia Eng did a doctor who based song on this thing.

And like, now I want a universe where the Doctor *is* the clock. Or...where the clock itself is his Tardis.

I mean, I'm not a whovian or anything, doncha know. (Totally being sarcastic here.)

I have always assumed a) that he grew to fit the clock, rather than the clock growing with him and b) that it was magically bound to him somehow but that he powered it more than it influencing him. I think it ran on his lifeforce, rather than strictly by clockwork (though it does appear to still need weekly winding).
