Another Encanto fic idea --

...one of the kids (Camilo maybe) coming out as trans, and the casita door just quietly affirms the new identity

(I was thinking about how Abuela's door probably didn't originally read Abuela, and then made a connection to other identity changed)

Also, the show producers have said that although adults who marry in don't get Gifts, adopted children would, because family isn't just blood. Kinda wanna do something with that.

I've been trying to work out when the movie takes place...

the flashbacks seem to imply conquistadors, and there's enough European cultural influence for a) Hercules and b) a church, plus c) alarm clock, but I don't remember any other cues. And I don't know enough about Colombian history to know if the events in the caterpillar flashbacks are indicative of time period.

...though since they've been isolated from the world for like 30-whatever years -- long enough for the triplets to grow up and have kids who are now late teens -- can you imagine retreating from the world in 1992 or earlier and emerging NOW? 🤣🤣🤣

I have been told that the flashbacks are a dead ringer for events from La Violencia. Which would put the nominal timeframe as late-20th century, but there's very clearly zero electricity in the Encanto (though much much of that is probably because they're, for all we can tell, completely isolated from everything, and did the refugees have folks with the technical skill to set up a local power plant, i think not). I think practically/socially they've ended up as a pinched-off bubble of early C20, drawing from rural traditions going a lot further back than that.

I stand corrected: the inspiration is actually the Thousand Days' War. Yay for learning history.

Oh, and canonically it's fifty years between the flashbacks and Now.

There's a blink-and-miss-it line from Alma during Antonio's ceremony about "fifty years ago"; personally I think that's a little too long, and 40-45 makes more sense (for my reasons, look here.)

(It has been living rent-free in my brain TO THE EXCLUSION OF ANYTHING ELSE for the last week and a half.)

I see that I'm not the only one who's had Encanto move into their brain and refuse to leave recently. :)

As [personal profile] batrachian said, common consensus seems to be that the flashbacks were set during the Thousand Days' War, which would put the main story sometime in the late 1940s/early 1950s since it's set fifty years later. I've seen a few alternate theories for timing, but that seems to be the one that the most people agree with.
