Saw Avatar; it was more or less as I expected.
I kind of wish I hadn't gone in knowing it was (as
sineala put it) a racist, sexist, ablist, imperialist fantasy, because I might have enjoyed it more. But I was there for the pretty.
The 3Dness was distracting at best; I didn't feel like it added much. Of course, immersion in a fantasy world is hard when you have a Loud Talker sitting next to you (with bonus Burpage). And except for the moments when I wanted to swat the floating stuff out of my face, it was kind of cool.
The plot was ... problematic. Especially since, as
suricattus (I think?) pointed out, the humans are just going to come back and nuke the fucking planet from space, get the plot point (unobtanium? seriously, y'all, unobtanium?), and get out. Also, they made a huge point of how Jake was untrained, and it ... had very little consequence.
But the pretty was there! The world was utterly gorgeous. I loved everything we saw, from the tiny floating jellyfish goddess-tree seeds and the whirligig whateverytheywere to the not-dragons tonagrand the floating mountains. Though -- all of the native life seemed to be six-limbed (either four legs and wings, or six legs), so why are the Na'vi four-limbed?
....yeeeaaaah.
Also? I totally fucking want Avatar technology. *makes whimpery noises*
