Given a Windows machine, any suggestions for:

* mail program (I've been using Thunderbird, and will probably default to that unless anyone has any good alternatives)

* IRC program (been using mIRC, hate the nagging though)

* software to sync a fairly old Palm with

* anything else that I might have forgotten

?

For IRC, I always like Pidgin, which is mostly an instant messenger program, but it does have IRC capabilities, and it isn't as annoying as mIRC.

Plus, having one program do nearly everything is very very nice.

There is also the XChat option, with a Windows version. Having used the Linux version pretty heavily, I scuttled mIRC in favor of that.

Wish I could offer suggestions on some of the other stuff!

For IRC, if you are using Firefox I suggest Chatzilla. It's rather easy to set up and, IMO, is simple to use.

Thunderbird is about is good as any mail program out there.

For IRC on Windows I like X-Chat. Look for the free version, some arse decided to compile, market, and charge for a version (it's open source).

Even older Palms will sync to more recent versions of Palm Desktop. I had a Treo 650 that would sync to the (at the time) latest version for Vista. I think it works for ones quite ancient.

I'm going to recommend HydraIRC for IRC; it's one of the better IRC programs, I think. X-Chat has too different an interface on Windows from what you normally expect, Pidgin's IRC capabilities aren't the same as that of a normal IRC client, and mIRC isn't free (and has a reputation of being easy to exploit to boot).
