Is there something specific linking the dark!valdemar fics aside from them being the opposite of YAY SPARKLY TELEPATHICNESS? I'm just unsure whether it's a specific AU or just a concept... sorry if I'm dense! :)

Just a concept! It's just ... the Valdemar books are all (or mostly) YAY SPARKLY TELEPATHIC PONIES THAT MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER. Except there are creepy aspects to it, like the fact that a Chosen gets forced into a lifelong mental bond, or like the fact that the Heralds are by definition Never Wrong, or like the fact that surely there are kids born with Gifts who either aren't found by the Companions or who aren't nice people ... so at one point I was talking with someone and was all "Dark!Valdemar would be an awesome Yuletide prompt" and she agreed so I did it and people wrote it.
