John is not a stranger to grief. Nor to death; no soldier is, no doctor is, and so John is doubly fucked in that regard. And he is not a stranger to loss or loneliness.
He knows all this.
It doesn't help.
#
He dreams of waking up to find Sherlock alive, complaining of how utterly boring it is to be dead. His face is unbloodied, unbruised, unbroken; his body is vibrant, his eyes bright, his voice full of amusement at all the little things that he sees and assumes John sees too.
He dreams of waking up from that dream to remember that Sherlock is still dead.
He dreams of waking up from that to tell Sherlock about his latest (and completely improbable) dream, and Sherlock responds by telling him how--
(He wakes, and aches too much to bear.)
