About a week after Sherlock's death, John has an all-out argument with him. It starts with what to do about dinner, diverts into whether or not to have the telly on, devolves into the purpose of friendships and loyalties and emotions, awkwardly dances through a tangent about the difference between love and physical craving, and somehow ends up on the topic of pizza toppings.
There is a part of John that wonders if he's gone mental, but then the Sherlock in his head points out that if Sherlock can have conversations with John while John's gone out, John can damn well have conversations with Sherlock when Sherlock's not there.

He tells himself that he's better off without Sherlock. The man, after all, was a complete sociopath, at best infuriating to live with, with no morals whatsoever; someone who took pleasure primarily in a) crimes, preferably grisly ones, and b) making other people out to be complete idiots. Someone John would be better off without.
He tells himself this, and doesn't believe it.
