Came down with a UTI, for the first time in a few years. Still hate them. But at least I know the symptoms -- strong distinctive odor to pee, bright scoury crampy bladder pain especially right afterwards -- to get it treated pretty quickly. (The first time I ever got one, in college, I for some reason decided it was a character flaw or personal failure or something, and so didn't go in until it was super bad, possibly a full blown kidney infection, I don't remember too clearly.)
Now, one day into the antibiotics, I have very strong pain in my lower back, sort of kidney area. I don't know if this is related or not but it makes things extra fun.
I'm kind of tired of wacky health hijinks, please.

Date: 2014-05-21 11:02 am (UTC)Yeah, that kind of pain is usually (for me) one of the key signs I've got an actual UTI (or sometimes a kidney/bladder infection), along with frequent urges to pee and the distinctive smell of the resulting urine. Usually once I'm on antibiotics, the back pain clears up within 2-3 days. But it absolutely is a normal symptom. :)
Cranberry pills, heating pad against the small of the back where it hurts, and drinking buckets and buckets of water is how I usually handle the discomfort. Phenazopyridine (Uristat) is an over-the-counter thing you can take for the first few days of the antibiotic run that will also help alleviate the pain, although many people find the side effects distressing. (It turns your pee bright orange. No, really. BRIGHT fucking traffic-cone orange.) Don't take it past the first few days of treatment, because 2-3 days of antibiotics should be enough for the pain and urgency to go away -- and if it doesn't by the time the run of antibiotics is finished, that can be a sign that the infection is still present -- and the stuff will both mask the symptoms and prevent a lab from getting a good culture out of the urine if you've taken it within 24 hours of the sample being taken, but it's been very helpful for me in the past.
