So I signed up for
stargate_summer, and even though I'm horribly behind (I should be at 35kish words; I have not yet hit 10k), I haven't given up yet.
The basic summary is that Daniel gets swapped with the Daniel from an alternate reality (*pauses to glee about the fact that stargate has *canon* infinite ARs*) where Jack is Apophis. This takes place late season three: necessarily after Pretense (3x15), which also means after FiaD.
Originally (this story idea has been in my head for a while -- by which I mean since before September 2001, aka longer than I worked for LJ support and longer than I have lived in my current apartment [and digging up the date info also found me a random unrelated fic snippet, hee]), the story had two alternating storylines, one of Daniel B in Universe A (aka canon universe) and one of Daniel A in Universe B.
The problem with that was that there was far less for Daniel B to do (... freak out about Jack and Teal'c; try to find a way home; ... ) than for Daniel A to do, and really, the main thing the B-in-A scenes were there for was infodumping. They've become less and less relevant, to the point that the fic is now just A-in-B. Which led then to the problem of communicating the relevant information to Daniel (and to the readers); I think I was using the lame-ass method of having him read mission reports.
And originally, I had no idea who the fourth team member of the universe-B SG-1 was; Kawalsky was taking Jack's place, and there was Sam and Daniel, but Teal'c wasn't around (by logic -- Jack was Goa'ulded before he could persuade Teal'c to rebel -- as well as story necessity -- he's rather part of the plot).
Shortly after I signed up for s_s, it occurred to me that Sha're could be the fourth member of SG-1 (B). Which was awesome in more ways than just "there isn't enough Sha're in fic". Except she keeps dumping unexpected surprises on me (like when she asked Daniel to tell her about Abydos, since she had been exiled for various reasons that mainly involved her choice to join SG-1).
It occurred to me last night that having Sha're around actually solved the problem of infodumping. At the point where both of them know he's from a different reality, he could perfectly plausibly ask her "...so, er, what's the thing with Jack?" and she, having been there, could tell him.
(of course, she firsts asks him to tell *her* what his story is. So that she knows what's different, and Daniel almost protests that he has the same problem, except then he catches the not-really-suppressed amusement in her eyes and realizes that she *knows* he has the same problem. ...this exchange amuses me, but it also allows for smoother writing; I can summarize what Daniel says to her, since it's canon events, and then only have her go into details about the divergences from canon.)
Today, when I was coming back from farmer's market, she decided that it would be Completely Awesome to get pregnant.
...
(she's really happy, and Daniel asks her what's up, and she says that she didn't want to say anything until she was certain, but -- and halfway through she slips into abydonoan out of excitement, and at first Daniel doesn't really process what she said, and then he's all "...!!!" and she goes "we decided--" and then kind of shutters down, realizing that it wasn't *that* Daniel that had decided/agreed, it was the other one, and then Daniel's all "no, no, it's good, really," and then he has to go put his head between his knees and hyperventilate because he's a giant dorkface.)
