Can metformin fuck with mood? I asked someone on my med team and she said no, but I'm coping even less well than I had been. So either a) metformin is doing something ungood, b) I'm in less pain (because of upping pain meds) and therefore my brain can devote more awareness to emotional shit, or c) I'm more of a failure (just in general) than I used to be.

I hate being broken.

I for one do not see you as a failure.

Sorry the moods are hard just now.

Isn't blood sugar itself said to affect mood? Or are you speaking of something less brutal than mood crashes or downspirals?

A quick scholar search says no but...also sometimes? One journal article I found said metformin can sometimes cause decreased levels of B12 and that those decreases can cause depression that is alleviated when B12 levels are brought back up to where they should be. That might be something to check out with blood work?

So when your brain's used to operating at a certain level of sugar, it understands that level of sugar to be normal and below that as a hunger signal, which sometimes turns into hanger.

So yeah, that's the mechanism that metformin and its little friends use that results in mood fuckery for me.

The good news is that it will reset over time.

It sucks 😖

I can't remember how long it took me; it was long enough to notice but I think it had corrected within the month.

Also coming to say that IME metformin's whole point and purpose is to change blood sugar levels, and changing blood sugar levels has an impact on mood - I remember it being a bit of a nightmare when I first started treatment, but it's long enough ago that I don't really remember how long it took to find a new baseline. *hand squeezes* - good luck with navigating your way through it!

Metformin fucks with both my mood and my POTS, yeah. The mood goes away after 2-3 weeks; the POTS never did, and I wound up having to switch to taking it in the evenings (which has a much lesser but nonzero effect that seems to be holding me steady at "meh, numbers slightly high but not a disaster").
