whee, Naxx
Jun. 13th, 2009 11:14 pmHad a surpriez Naxx run last night. (for those that don't play World of Warcraft, this is a fairly high-end raid where you go around killing things that are quite hard to kill.)
It was a fairly relaxed run, of the 10-man version, normal difficulty, and not a pug. I'm not at the point where I can pug Naxx, and my dps is complete *crap* (and I need better equipment), but it was a group that needed a couple more people to fill in, and so in the channel I hang out with, one of the people said "anyone wanna do Naxx?" and I said yes as long as they didn't ming a complete nublet that was undergeared and clueless.
... including clueless to the point of not knowing how to get there. Yes, Naxx was on my map, but I couldn't find it, and then (one time when we wiped and I rezzed and went off to repair) I couldn't figure out how to get inside. Plus, I didn't realize that all four portals were the same thing.
(If any non-WoW people are reading this: you enter an instance through a portal, which is a kind of glowy swirly barrier. Some places are hubs for more than one instance; you go through door A, you end up in one instance, you go through door B, you end up in another. They are never labeled. (I still have problems keeping track of which SSC instance is which.) Naxx is basically this giant four-sided pyramid, and there are portals on all four sides. There are also several wings, and so naturally I thought that one side was for each wing. Turns out there's a specific sequence and it doesn't matter which you go through.)
Partly as a result, I didn't get 'credit' for the first boss. Then again, we didn't end up getting the last boss either. (...he is one hard boss to kill.) So no achievement for that, but hey. I died ... a few too many times, but I don't think I actually got anyone killed, even though this was my first time through. \o/
(Translation for non-WoW people: particularly with bosses, there will often be things that affect people around you, and so if you aren't careful you can kill other raid members. I knew about Thaddius, aka the funky polarity boss, where each person in the raid has a positive or negative charge, and will harm/kill anyone of the opposite charge that gets too close. So you split up based on polarity, one group on either side of the boss; but your personal polarity will change semirandomly through the fight, which means you have to run to the other side or risk dying or killing someone.)
...I have come to the conclusion that rogue may not have been the best choice for my highest-level character. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love rogues; I love stealth, and sap, and pickpocket, and stuff, and it's generally awesome. Except for the thing where the only real possible role is melee dps, there is very little in the way of AoE, very little ranged damage, and rogues are squishy. Other DPS classes either have better armor or have ranged attacks. Sigh.
Anyway, had fun, even though I had to bail on them at the end (because it was 11:40 and I had to be up early for church -- good thing too, as it turned out, because I was the only singer from my group there for the early service -- and because my aide, who was already cranky at me for pulling the "um, so I'm going to be staying up late (and getting up early)" thing with very little warning, was, well, cranky with me. *grin*) and I didn't really pull my weight.
Got some awesome loot, too - hatestrike and torment of the banished (both really nice swords \o/ so now I need to respec back to swords, heh), rapid attack gloves and tunic of dislocation (which replace parts of my eviscerator's set, which is sad, but the stats are nice), and spaulders of the lost vanquisher (t7 shoulders *makes squeaking noises of glee*)
Still not at the point where I can pug Naxx; even if my gear and dps were up to par, which they're not, I don't really know what I'm doing. But for the most part it makes more sense than some of Kara did >_>

Date: 2009-06-14 09:59 pm (UTC)I haven't done Ulduar yet, I wonder if it's the same. I know back in BC, Burning Temple/Sunwell Plateau were very melee-unfriendly as well.

Date: 2009-06-14 11:29 pm (UTC)My resident Fury warrior is quoted as saying "I'd say Ulduar is more melee-friendly than Naxx, because it could hardly be worse," though, so I guess my healer/ranged DPS POV is a little biased. :D

Date: 2009-06-15 09:26 am (UTC)Now that you have two nice swords, I'd recommend this sword spec for pve dps.
Make sure you main hand the Torment since it's slower and offhand the Hatestrike since it's faster. Your best enchant is Berserker, but that's hella expensive for Naxx10 weapons, so you might just want to go with Mongoose, Accuracy, or Super Potency.
On trash packs you'll just want to spam Fan of Knives for AoE unless there's CC. Rogues can do quite well for themselves on trash, not that trash meters ever really matter much. (If you go look at the main chart for trash on that WWS, you'll see our rogues were top 2.)
For single targets/bosses, sinister strike until 5 combos, rupture, SS twice, SnD, use Killing Spree on CD and use Adrenaline Rush when Heroism goes up.
Unless the situation calls for other poisons, use I believe instant on MH and deadly on OH is still the best combo for DPS.
Until you can get 4 piece tier 8, just pick to gem and enchant with either agi or attack power, the difference is marginal at best. Once you have 4T8, agi takes the lead. You'll also want to expertise & hit cap for PvE, and they're useful to a smaller extent for PvP.
BTW, even if you don't feel comfortable pugging Naxx, you can try to pug heroics and Vault of Archavon 10 man (I wouldn't recommend 25 man until you're more comfortable putting out more DPS).
I'm sorry I basically didn't explain a single thing to you; I should have tried to give you the heads up more often. I'm glad you had a good time, though. <3 :)
