Finally got around to last night's SPN
Nov. 6th, 2009 05:25 pm... The Trickster-Gabriel thing ... I honestly don't know if that was planned from the beginning or pulled out of their ass, but it works more than I would have expected it to. Both in terms of levels of power (only the Trickster and angels have actually brought someone through time) and in terms of his interest in the boys.
Also, Sampala = complete win.
However. I still don't buy that Sam and Dean being The Vessels was ever a long-term plan, either in-show (in terms of Destiny etc) or meta (in terms of Kripke). It doesn't make sense. It doesn't make any sense at *all*.
"You know the truth, right? About Sammy? And the other children?"
"Yeah. I've known for a while."
"Why do you think you're here? This is a competition. Only one of you crazy kids is gonna make it out of here alive." ... "I don't need soldiers. I need soldier. I just need the one. I need a leader." ... "I mean, why do you think so many children flamed out already? Max Miller and Andy's brother, what's-his-name -- they weren't strong enough. I'm looking for the best and brightest of your generation."
"My generation?"
"Well, there's other generations, but let's just worry about yours. That's why I'm here, Sam. I wanna give you the inside track. You're tough. You're smart. You're well-trained, thanks to your daddy. Sam - Sammy - you're my favorite."
"There's so much evil out there in the world, Dean, I feel like I could drown in it. And when I think about my destiny, when I think about how I could end up..."
"Before Dad died he, he ... said that he wanted me to watch out for you, to take care of you. ... This time was different. He said that I had to save you, that nothing else mattered; and that if I couldn't, ... That I'd have to kill you. He said that I might have to kill you, Sammy."
I liked it better when Sam wasn't the One True Host for Lucifer, hadn't been fated as that for all time, when his destiny was only that he might turn dark side. And, I mean. It makes sense on several levels to use Sam and Dean as vessels, but not as a Fated To Be thing, not as It Always Had To Be You.
(Although it would put an interesting twist on Dean's deal in AHBL if the crossroads demon knew that Sam couldn't be permakilled, because of needing to be Lucifer's vessel, but took Dean's contract anyway.)
I just ... *flail* I don't know how to explain it. It just doesn't work for me.
