So I've been binge listening to Into the Woods the last few days. Because reasons. And also opinions about the movie.
Anyway, I realized -- I've always loved the way the Princes act as commentary on the archetype in fairy tales. ("I was raised to be charming, not sincere") -- but they're also, for much the same reasons, Nice Guys.
I mean:
1. Running away from them is unthinkable
2. "Did I abuse her or show her disdain" -- those are (per them) the only disqualifies. Not "we have nothing in common" or "smelly breath" or "I don't want to be a princess" or "I don't want a relationship right now" or "you are cardboard"
3. Falling for her is *her* fault, not his, and he bears no responsibility in taking his heart back
4. Being rejected by a girl is the worst pain ever
5. "The girl must be mad" -- nuff said
6. They don't want wives. They want things they can chase -- especially things they can chase *and never get*
7. Their songs (Agony abs the reprise) are about one-upping each other on the women they've found or the pain they're feeling from being rejected
8. Cinderella's Prince's but with the Baker's wife is 100% about him and what he wants and -100% about her
...I can't even articulate everything. Just. I love this musical SO MUCH.
(And I don't even mind having No One Is Alone and Children Will Listen endlessly looping in my head)
